SlyPilot Compared: One Cockpit Instead of a Pile of Utilities

Power users, software engineers and digital creatives on Windows often end up with a drawer full of single-purpose tools: one for dictation, one for window layouts, one for snippets, one for the clipboard, one for the microphone, one for the Stream Deck, an AI chat tab for rewriting text. Each is useful. Together they are a lot to install, learn, update and keep out of each other's way.
SlyPilot's idea is to put these in one small, local-first program (about 13 MB, about 60 MB of memory when idle, no accounts, no telemetry in the program) that works with touch, pen and Surface Dial as well as keyboard and mouse, and that never takes focus from the window you are typing in.

🥊 Deep Dives: What Is Different About SlyPilot
1. Dictation that runs on your PC (SlyPilot Pro)
If you use a push-to-talk dictation product today, SlyPilot's AI dictation is meant as a replacement you can run offline. It is part of SlyPilot Pro, so it competes as a paid one-time product (US$39), not as a free one; the free core opens Windows Voice Typing instead.
- It runs locally. SlyPilot runs OpenAI Whisper models (Tiny, Base, Small, Medium, Large v3 Turbo) and NVIDIA Parakeet models through small local helper programs (whisper.cpp and CrispASR) on your NVIDIA GPU (CUDA), another graphics card (Vulkan) or the CPU. One click ("Set up automatically for this PC") picks the engine to suit your hardware, after a window that lists every file and its size.
- No subscription: Pro is a one-time purchase. It works with the network unplugged once the models are downloaded.
- It is more than typing. The same program runs over 550 voice commands (free), so you can dictate a paragraph and then say "snap left", "close tab" or "mute microphone".
- It can polish. An optional step (off until you set it up) sends your dictated text to the AI model you chose to clean up grammar and fillers; the raw text is typed whenever the model is slow or fails.
- Honest limits: dictation is off until you enable it; engines are a download of roughly 100 MB to about 1.2 GB depending on your hardware; voice commands and the wake word are English-first.
2. Window layouts, with touch in mind
Window-layout utilities such as FancyZones are good at what they do, and you can run them next to SlyPilot. SlyPilot's snap tools are built for a finger or pen as much as for a mouse:
- A snap card with 18 one-tap zones (halves, thirds, two-thirds, a 25 / 50 / 25 row for wide screens, quadrants, centre, maximise), a fling to the next monitor and a hover outline that shows where the window would land.
- Undo snap: "restore window" puts a window back where it was before its first snap.
- Your own zones in Settings > Snap, usable by voice, command line and agents.
- Workspaces snapshot a whole multi-desktop arrangement to plain INI files. Starting missing programs is optional (off by default).
- Display-layout memory for docking and undocking a laptop is optional and off by default (
AutoRestoreTopology=1); it restores positions only. Try it for a while before relying on it.
3. Virtual desktops through Windows' own interfaces
SlyPilot reaches the Windows virtual desktop interfaces through a small native helper, VirtualDesktopAccessor.dll (by Jari Pennanen, MIT licence), and registers for desktop-change notifications instead of polling. The interfaces are undocumented by Microsoft, so a big Windows update can occasionally break the helper until a matching version exists; SlyPilot checks at start and says so in plain words rather than silently doing nothing.
4. A Touch Bar that never takes your focus
A touch toolbar that is an ordinary window can deselect your canvas layer, close a context menu or pull the caret out of your editor the moment you tap it. SlyPilot's tool windows are built to avoid that:
- They use
WS_EX_NOACTIVATEand answerWM_MOUSEACTIVATEwithMA_NOACTIVATE. - Window actions use the real target window you were working in, never SlyPilot's own windows.
- Surface Pen press-and-hold delay and circle are switched off on SlyPilot's own windows, and a hold-to-talk button starts dictation as soon as the pen touches the glass.
- The command palette, which you type into, is the one deliberate exception.
5. Natural voices without a cloud (SlyPilot Pro)
SlyPilot downloads, on request, Kokoro-82M, Piper and Supertonic voices and runs them in a small helper on your PC (part of SlyPilot Pro; standard Windows voices remain active in the free core): 45 English voices across three engines, a voice per purpose (a quick Piper voice for short confirmations, Kokoro for long reading), and reading of your selection, clipboard or a screen rectangle. Nothing you have read aloud is sent anywhere.
6. AI on your text, with you choosing the model
Most AI writing help starts with pasting your text somewhere else. SlyPilot's AI actions start where the text already is:
- Select, press a key, get a card. The answer appears next to your window with Replace selection, Insert after and Copy. Nothing changes until you click.
- You pick where the text goes. A small model that SlyPilot downloads and runs on your PC (llama.cpp with Qwen models, listed with their sizes and licences before anything downloads), Ollama or LM Studio on your PC, or a service such as Ollama's cloud or OpenRouter with your own key. A model on your PC keeps the text on your PC; an outside service is refused until you tick a box naming its host.
- More than the selection:
@screenreads text from a rectangle of the screen by offline OCR,@clipuses the clipboard,@meetinguses your newest meeting transcript, and follow-up questions keep the thread for 10 minutes in memory. - Your own actions and a usual action per program, spoken forms ("fix that", "make that shorter"), and a "put that back" that undoes the last replacement after checking the text is still what was pasted.
- Honest limits: the small built-in model answers a short request in roughly 4 to 10 seconds on a laptop CPU (the figure from the program's own guide), is English-only and is better at fixing text than rewriting it; a graphics card with Ollama or LM Studio is much faster. See the AI Actions guide.
7. Meeting notes you control (SlyPilot Pro)
Meeting notes (part of SlyPilot Pro) are a feature people reasonably worry about, so SlyPilot is strict about them: you start it yourself every time (no program, voice command or script can start it for you), a consent window appears on first use and a notice with a sentence to tell other participants appears at each start, a red indicator stays on every desktop and cannot be hidden, audio is cut into short pieces that are deleted as soon as they are turned into text, and the transcript is a plain file in %LOCALAPPDATA%\SlyPilot\Transcripts that you can delete from the tray menu. Recording other people can need their consent where you live. See Meeting Notes.
8. Your phone as a remote (SlyPilot Pro)
The Phone Remote (part of SlyPilot Pro) turns an Android phone with Chrome into a trackpad, keyboard, microphone, window switcher, Touch Bar and remote-desktop view of your PC. It works on your private network only, is off until you switch it on, requires pairing with a code shown on your own screen, encrypts everything, and lets you set permissions per phone. Protected windows such as password managers stay black in the screen view.
9. Agents that drive the desktop by name, not by guesswork
An AI coding assistant can drive Windows by clicking coordinates in screenshots. SlyPilot offers a structured alternative through its MCP server (SlyPilot.exe mcp) with 20 typed tools:
- Windows are targeted by handle or title, controls by their UI Automation name ("Save", "Submit"), not by pixel position.
- Off until you choose a level in the tray menu. Keyboard, mouse and program-launch levels are time-limited; risky requests show a window that only your click can approve.
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F12or "pause agent control" freezes every agent at once. Password-manager and private-browsing windows are hidden from agents and painted black in screenshots, and you can add more.- The classic command-line switches and
/say(used by Stream Deck and your own macros) are not covered by the agent gate: any local program can use them.
10. SlyPilot vs. Dragon NaturallySpeaking & Nuance Dragon Professional
For over two decades, Dragon NaturallySpeaking (now Nuance / Microsoft Dragon Professional) has been the traditional benchmark for desktop speech recognition and voice control on Windows. While Dragon was groundbreaking in the late 1990s and 2000s, speech recognition and modern operating system ergonomics have evolved radically.
Here is how SlyPilot compares to Dragon Professional:
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature / Dimension | Nuance Dragon Professional (v16) | SlyPilot Desktop Helpers (Free core; Pro marked) |
|---|---|---|
| Speech Recognition Engine | Legacy statistical acoustic & language models (HMM/DNN) | Modern Transformer Neural AI (OpenAI Whisper v3 Turbo & NVIDIA Parakeet) for dictation (Pro); the free core opens Windows Voice Typing |
| Voice Training Required? | Yes (15–30 min reading calibration scripts and building acoustic profiles) | No voice-training step in the AI dictation (Pro) |
| Installation & Footprint | 3.5 GB to 4+ GB install size, multiple heavy background services | ~13 MB program, ~60 MB memory when idle |
| Price & Licensing | About $699 one-time (or enterprise cloud subscriptions) | Free core (MIT); Pro US$39 one-time, up to 3 personal PCs, 1 year of updates included |
| Screen Mouse Navigation | 3x3 MouseGrid (say "MouseGrid 1... 9") | 6x4 Numbered Screen Grid with zoom, drag-and-drop, and click modes |

| AI Polish & Text Rewriting | ❌ (Types literal transcription only) | ✅ Integrated AI Actions (free: fix grammar, shorten, summarize, translate via a model you choose, on your PC or a service you name) |
| Offline Meeting Recording | ❌ (Monologue dictation only) | ✅ Meeting notes (Pro): offline transcript of Mic + PC audio, optional summary by your own AI model (SlyMeet) |
| Mobile Remote Control | ❌ (Requires separate Dragon Anywhere cloud app) | ✅ Zero-install Phone Remote (Pro) (trackpad, keyboard, mic, screen view via local Wi-Fi; Chrome on Android) |
| Desktop Ergonomics | ❌ (Speech only) | ✅ Virtual Desktops, 18 Snap Zones, Touch Bar, Radial Menu, Surface Pen/Dial |
| In-Document "Select-and-Say" | ✅ Deep arbitrary in-document editing (via COM/DLL injection into Word/Outlook) | ⚡ Focus-safe stream editing ("scratch that", "capitalize that", AI text actions) |
| Offline Privacy | Depends on edition and settings; check the vendor | No telemetry in the program; voice commands and Pro's AI dictation run locally (loopback only) |
Where Dragon Has the Advantage (Features Dragon Has That SlyPilot Doesn't)
To remain completely objective and transparent, Dragon Professional includes several niche capabilities built over 25 years that SlyPilot handles differently or deliberately omits:
- Deep "Select-and-Say" (Arbitrary In-Document Voice Cursor Navigation):
- In Dragon, you can say "Select the second sentence of paragraph three" or "Change the word 'invoice' to 'estimate' throughout the document". Dragon accomplishes this by injecting deep COM add-ins and DLL hooks directly into Microsoft Word, Outlook, and WordPerfect processes.
- Why SlyPilot handles this differently: Injecting custom DLLs into third-party host processes is notoriously fragile: it frequently crashes when Office or Windows updates, triggers security alarms, and breaks SlyPilot's core zero-focus-loss design. Instead, SlyPilot provides instant "scratch that" (undoes last dictation; part of Pro's AI dictation), voice casing/formatting ("capitalize that", "bullet that"), and AI Actions (free; select any text with a mouse, pen, or hotkey and say "fix that" or "rewrite that").
- Audio File Batch Transcription (Monologues):
- Dragon Professional includes a wizard to transcribe pre-recorded single-speaker WAV or MP3 files recorded on digital voice recorders.
- SlyPilot focuses on live interactive dictation (Pro) and live meeting recording (Pro,
SlyMeet). (For batch transcribing files, standalone open-source Whisper CLI tools can be used).
- Vocabulary Mining from Sent Emails & Documents:
- Dragon can scan your sent email folders and Word documents to automatically build a custom statistical dictionary.
- SlyPilot (Pro) uses a clean, transparent custom vocabulary word list and an interactive "Fix a word" correction mechanism where you teach the model corrections directly as you work.
The Verdict: Why Modern Users Choose SlyPilot over Dragon
Dragon was built for a 1990s paradigm of office secretaries dictating into Microsoft Word on single monitors. SlyPilot is built for the modern multi-window, multi-monitor, AI-assisted power user:
- No Voice Training Step: The AI dictation in Pro (Whisper Large v3 Turbo and NVIDIA Parakeet) needs no calibration text before you start.
- Small footprint: a program of about 13 MB that uses about 60 MB of memory when idle, compared to Dragon's multi-gigabyte install.
- Beyond Just Typing: SlyPilot integrates voice with your whole workstation—switching virtual desktops, snapping 4K windows by touch, using Surface Pens and Dials, and, with Pro, recording calls offline and controlling your PC from your Android phone.
- Price: Dragon Professional is listed at about $699. SlyPilot's core is free (MIT licence); AI dictation, meeting notes, phone remote and natural voices are SlyPilot Pro, a single US$39 one-time purchase for up to 3 personal PCs (1 year of updates included).
11. SlyPilot vs. VoiceAttack (Gaming & Macro Voice Control)
VoiceAttack ($11.99 on Steam / web) is a popular voice-activated macro utility primarily designed for PC gamers, flight simulators (Microsoft Flight Simulator), and space sims (Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen). It listens for spoken trigger phrases and executes pre-recorded keyboard/mouse macros or audio soundbites.
Comparison Matrix
| Feature / Capability | VoiceAttack | SlyPilot Desktop Helpers |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Focus | Flight sims, space sims & game macros | All-in-one Windows power-user & productivity cockpit |
| Dictation Engine | None (macro triggering only) | Windows Voice Typing (free); Whisper & Parakeet AI dictation on your GPU/CPU (Pro) |
| Speech Engine | Legacy Windows Speech Recognition (SAPI) | The Windows speech recognizer, optionally with local AI speech engines for more accurate commands |
| Free Tier / Limits | Strict 20-command limit on free trial | Free core (MIT), no trial and no time limit, over 550 built-in commands plus your own commands and packs |
| Application Profiles | Profile files (.vap) | Plain-text .vdspack voice packs (VS Code, Photoshop, etc.) |
| Mouse / Control Clicking | Fixed screen pixel coordinates | Windows UI Automation click by name + 6x4 Screen Grid |
| Natural Conversational Syntax | Mostly exact phrase matching | Polite lead-ins, trailing words, synonyms, and chaining |
| Virtual Desktops & Workspaces | ❌ None | ✅ Instant desktop switching, workspace snapshots, peeker |
| Touch, Stylus & Dial Support | ❌ None | ✅ Zero-focus Touch Bar, 18 snap zones, Surface Dial & Pen |
| AI Actions & LLM Polish | ❌ None | ✅ Select text to fix, summarize, or translate via a model you choose |
| Phone Remote Control | ❌ None | ✅ Wireless trackpad, keyboard, mic, and screen view (Pro) |
| Where VoiceAttack Wins | Complex conditional branching (if/then) & HOTAS / joystick button triggers | Dedicated flight-sim cockpit integrations |
The Bottom Line: If you exclusively need complex joystick-triggered macro trees inside Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen, VoiceAttack is a great specialized tool. But for everyday Windows productivity, coding, writing, window management, and AI dictation, SlyPilot's free core covers voice macros, keystroke commands and app packs (AI dictation is part of Pro), while adding a modern desktop cockpit, AI actions, and touch ergonomics.
12. SlyPilot vs. Tablet Pro & On-Screen Touch Toolbars
Tablet Pro ($30–$50 / year or one-time) is a well-known touch overlay utility for Microsoft Surface tablets, 2-in-1s, and digital drawing pads (Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Blender).
The Critical Difference: Zero Focus Loss
- The Problem with Traditional Overlays (Tablet Pro): Traditional on-screen touch toolbars are standard top-level Windows apps. When you tap a button on an overlay, Windows activates the overlay window, which steals keyboard focus, deselects your active text caret, or interrupts your active brush stroke in Photoshop.
- SlyPilot's Engineering Solution: Every SlyPilot tool window (
TouchGui,PillGui,SnapGui,RadialGui) is explicitly styled withWS_EX_NOACTIVATEand trapsWM_MOUSEACTIVATE. Touching a virtual desktop button, tapping a snap layout, or sliding the dock never steals focus from your active editor or canvas. - Hardware Pen Acceleration: Windows Ink natively delays stylus clicks to detect right-click press-and-hold gestures. SlyPilot disables this latency via low-level
MicrosoftTabletPenServicePropertyWin32 flags, so Surface Pen tapping and dragging are instantaneous. - Cost: Tablet Pro requires paid licenses or recurring subscriptions for its Artist Pad and custom toolbars. SlyPilot's floating Touch Bar, Peek Pill drawer, Snap Layouts card, and Radial Menu are free and open source (MIT).
14. SlyPilot vs. ZoomIt, Epic Pen and Other Presentation Tools
ZoomIt (Microsoft Sysinternals, also shipped inside Microsoft PowerToys) is the tool most people use to zoom a screen and draw on it in a talk. It is free, small and good at its job: a hotkey zooms (Ctrl+1 by default), a live zoom keeps the screen usable while magnified, draw mode puts ink on the screen (Ctrl+2), you can type text, run a break timer and record the screen. Epic Pen is a Windows annotation overlay with a free Basic version and a paid Pro licence for more colours, text and shapes.
| What matters in a talk | ZoomIt (free) | Epic Pen | SlyPilot (free core) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoom a part of the screen | ✅ zoom and live zoom | not its job | ✅ the Windows Magnifier, SlyPilot's glass, strip and a frozen still picture to draw on |
| Draw or write on the screen | ✅ | ✅ (more tools with Pro) | ✅ pen with pressure, marker, line, arrow, box, oval, text, numbered markers, laser, eraser, pixel eraser |
| Pages, a white or black board, a page overview, save as PNGs and a PDF | board colours | check the vendor | ✅ pages, white and black boards with grid or lined paper, an overview, Done saves PNGs and a PDF |
| Made for touch and pen | mouse and keys | check the vendor | ✅ a toolbar for fingers, the pen's buttons and eraser end, hold the pen still to tidy a stroke |
| Spotlight and a ring round the pointer and every click | not in its feature list | check the vendor | ✅ |
| Show the shortcuts you press to the audience | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ never what you type; nothing while a password manager or private window is in front |
| A countdown on the screen | ✅ break timer | ❌ | ✅ the focus timer's countdown in a corner, amber under a minute |
| One switch for the whole talk (awake, notifications quiet, icons hidden, put back afterwards) | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ Presenting mode |
| Voice control of the tools | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ the words for the tools, inks, paper and pages while the board is up |
| Read the text under the pointer aloud, with the line outlined | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ |
| An AI assistant that can point, circle and walk you through | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ through the agent API and MCP, after your approval |
| Record the screen | ✅ | ❌ | SlyPilot Pro (screen recording), and the recorder can capture what the magnifier shows |
| Price | free | free Basic, paid Pro | free (MIT); Pro is optional |
Where ZoomIt is the better fit: you want one tiny tool, it already does what you need, and your talk is mouse and keyboard only. It is also the safe pick on a locked-down PC where you cannot install more. SlyPilot can run next to it (give the two different hotkeys).
Where SlyPilot fits better: you teach or present from a tablet, a pen display or a touch screen; you want a countdown, key display, spotlight and a quiet PC set up with one word; or you want an assistant to show things on your screen.
15. SlyPilot's Magnifier vs. the Windows Magnifier and ZoomText / Fusion
The Windows Magnifier is built in and good: full screen, lens and docked views. SlyPilot does not replace it: it drives it (keys, voice, command line, a window and a panel for touch and pen) and adds views of its own: a magnifying glass that follows the pointer or stays where you park it, a typing glass above the text cursor, a strip pinned to a screen edge, a pixel loupe with the colour under the pointer, small live windows of areas you watch, freeze, six profiles and several-monitor support. With SlyPilot Pro it can also show the magnified area on a second monitor and pick a profile for each program.
ZoomText and Fusion (Freedom Scientific) are professional low-vision products: magnification with deep visual enhancements and, in Fusion, the JAWS screen reader together. They are paid (store prices in 2026 run from about US$187 a year for a home subscription to several thousand dollars for professional perpetual licences). If you depend on a screen reader or need the full range of enhancements, use them; SlyPilot does not claim to replace a low-vision suite. It is a free, light addition for people who need things bigger some of the time, for presenters, and for anyone who wants a glass on the screen without another program.
| Windows Magnifier | ZoomText / Fusion | SlyPilot (free core) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full screen, lens, docked | ✅ | ✅ and more views | ✅ (it drives the Windows Magnifier) |

16. AI Assistants on the Desktop: SlyPilot's MCP Server vs. Other Desktop Bridges
Several projects give an AI assistant control of Windows through MCP. General desktop servers such as Windows-MCP expose actions like click, type, scroll, shortcut, a snapshot of the screen and a PowerShell shell, and say plainly that they act directly on your system. They are broad and flexible, and a fine choice if you want an assistant to work through the whole desktop.
SlyPilot's server is narrower on purpose, and it adds something those servers do not describe: the assistant can show you things instead of only doing them.
| General desktop MCP servers (for example Windows-MCP) | SlyPilot MCP server (free) | |

Where the others fit better: you want one tool that does everything including arbitrary shell commands and web scraping in the same server; SlyPilot deliberately keeps a narrow, gated set and does not run free-form shell commands for an assistant. Honest limit: the SlyPilot server was tried with Claude Code and with its own automatic tests; it has not been run against every client, and the extension bundle for Claude Desktop is prepared but not yet tried there.
17. 🗂️ Software SlyPilot Replaces (The Complete Directory)
Looking to declutter your Windows tray and cut recurring software fees? Items marked Pro need SlyPilot Pro (US$39 one-time); everything else here is in the free core. Here is the directory of tools that SlyPilot directly replaces or consolidates:
🎙️ Voice & Dictation Software
- Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking / Dragon Professional ($699 upfront): Replaced by SlyPilot Pro's Whisper v3 Turbo and Parakeet dictation (Pro), plus the 6x4 screen grid and UI Automation control clicking (free core), without a voice-training step.
- Wispr Flow ($144–$180/yr) & Lispr: Replaced by SlyPilot Pro's push-to-talk AI dictation (US$39 one-time). It runs on your PC: no audio uploads and no monthly fee.
- Superwhisper ($199 lifetime or $8.50/mo): Replaced by SlyPilot Pro (US$39 one-time, Windows only) with multi-monitor and virtual desktop integration.
- VoiceAttack ($11.99): Replaced by SlyPilot's Free Core (over 550 voice commands,
.vdspackapp voice packs, keystroke sequences, repeats, and key mode with no 20-command trial limit). - Talon Voice (Free / complex setup): Replaced by SlyPilot's natural conversational syntax, searchable visual Voice Guide, and zero-focus Touch Bar.
- Otter.ai & Fireflies.ai ($120–$216/yr): Replaced by SlyPilot Pro's
SlyMeetoffline meeting recorder. Captures mic + PC sound locally, with an optional summary by your own AI model and no bot joining your calls. - Speechify & NaturalReader ($120–$350/yr): Replaced by SlyPilot Pro's
SlyTts45 offline neural voices (Kokoro, Piper, Supertonic; English) to read a selection, the clipboard or a rectangle of the screen aloud.
🪟 Window Management & Multi-Monitor Tools
- DisplayFusion ($34–$49): Replaced by SlyPilot's instant virtual desktop switching, cross-monitor window flinging, and optional multi-monitor topology memory.
- AquaSnap ($18–$29): Replaced by SlyPilot's 18 touch snap zones, custom fractional zones, auto-tiling, and undo-snap.
- PowerToys FancyZones (Free): Enhanced by SlyPilot's one-tap touch snap card, radial menu integration, window peeker hover preview, and voice-command snapping.
- Actual Virtual Desktops & VirtuaWin: Replaced by SlyPilot's low-latency native COM integration with Windows 10/11 virtual desktops.
📱 Touch, Tablet & Remote Control
- Tablet Pro / Artist Pad ($30–$50): Replaced by SlyPilot's zero-focus-loss Touch Bar, collapsible Peek Pill, Surface Pen hover proximity, and press-and-hold flick suppression.
- Unified Remote ($5–$10 app + server): Replaced by SlyPilot Pro's
SlyRemote. Connects an Android phone over your local Wi-Fi with no app to install (a web page in Chrome) for trackpad, keyboard, microphone and screen view. - Windows Surface Dial Default Settings: Supercharged by SlyPilot's multi-mode Radial Dial tools (virtual desktops, volume, brightness, opacity, voice listening modes).
🔍 Magnifier, Presenting & Annotation Tools
- ZoomIt (free) and PowerToys' ZoomIt: SlyPilot does not replace it for mouse-and-keyboard talks that it already serves; SlyPilot adds touch and pen use, a spotlight, click rings, a shortcut display, a countdown, one Presenting mode switch and voice control (all free).
- Epic Pen (free Basic, paid Pro): Replaced for most uses by SlyPilot's drawing board (free), which also has pages, boards and a page overview.
- Key-display tools and pointer highlighters: Replaced by SlyPilot's "show my shortcuts" and pointer and click highlight (free).
- Windows Magnifier: Not replaced: SlyPilot drives it and adds a glass, a typing glass, a strip, a loupe and profiles. ZoomText / Fusion: not replaced (see above).
🧰 Daily Utilities & Snippets
- TextExpander ($40/yr) & PhraseExpress ($50–$140): Replaced by SlyPilot's built-in text expander with automatic safety exclusions for password managers and private browsing windows.
- Ditto, ClipClip & 1Clip: Replaced by SlyPilot's private in-memory 25-item clipboard history with pinning (never written to disk).
- MicSwitch & Mutemode: Replaced by SlyPilot's global hardware microphone mute (
Ctrl+Alt+Win+M) and live ON AIR desktop indicator. - Snipping Tool, ShareX (capture and OCR), Screenpresso & Text-Grab: SlyPilot takes screenshots itself (frozen screen, history, pins, copy text, Quick Redact) for free, and has an editor, screen recording, scrolling screenshots and guides in Pro. ShareX's upload destinations and automated workflows are not part of it, by design: SlyPilot keeps your pictures on your PC.
- PowerToys Awake & Caffeine: Replaced by SlyPilot's built-in Keep PC Awake timer.
- Espanso's forms and date math: Covered by the text expander's fill-ins (
{cursor},{input:Name},{choice:A|B},{date+3d}). - Browser pickers (Browserosaurus, BrowserSelect …): Replaced by the free Link Router: one rule per line, profiles by name, Shift-click to choose.
- Stretchly & Workrave (break reminders): Replaced by smart breaks, which wait through calls, presentations and full screen (free).
🗂️ Files & Explorer
- QuickLook & PowerToys Peek: Overlap with SlyPilot's file peek (Space in Explorer, follows the arrow keys). PowerToys Peek and QuickLook render more file types themselves.
- PowerRename, Bulk Rename Utility & PowerToys Image Resizer: Overlap with Rename Files and Resize Pictures (by voice, with a preview and undo). Bulk Rename Utility has far more options for heavy renaming.
- DropIt & File Juggler (folder rules): Overlap with Tidy a Folder (rules, preview, undo, tidy by itself).
🖥️ Displays, Sound & Hands-Free
- Twinkle Tray & Monitorian: Overlap with the display switches (brightness of every monitor). Twinkle Tray has schedules and linked sliders.
- EarTrumpet: Overlaps with the volume mixer (per-program volume, the output device), which adds Bluetooth headphones and voice.
- Sound Manager, SoundPackager & CursorFX (pointer packs): Overlapped by the free Sound Themer (20-pack gallery, From a style synthesizer,
.ths/ theme pack / Linux sound theme reader), Cursor Themer (94-pack gallery, 16 styles, safe.inf/ Xcursor rewriting without administrator rights), and Matching Sets (a pointer pack and a sound pack together in one click). CursorFX remains the choice for pointer trails and click effects. - Camera Mouse & Enable Viacam: Overlap with the head mouse, which adds voice, the click bar and where your head points tracking. They have far longer track records.
- Windows Recall (Copilot+ PCs) and the former Rewind: Overlap with Memory (Pro), which keeps text instead of pictures and runs on any PC.

⚖️ Where SlyPilot Is Not the Right Tool
Being useful means being clear about limits:
- Windows only (10, or 11 24H2 build 26100.2605 and newer for the virtual desktop helper). No macOS or Linux.
- AI dictation, phone remote, natural voices and meeting notes are SlyPilot Pro (US$39 one-time). The free core's dictation is Windows Voice Typing, which, depending on your Windows settings, may use Microsoft's online speech service.
- Not public yet. Downloads are not available at the moment, the installer is not code-signed (Windows SmartScreen may warn), and it is not in the Microsoft Store.
- English-first. The interface, the voice commands and the wake word are in English; dictation supports 38 languages (13 need a multilingual Whisper model).
- It does not replace everything. If you only need keyboard-and-mouse zones, a dedicated layout utility may be all you need, and SlyPilot can run alongside it. Windows already restores some window positions by itself, and SlyPilot's display-layout memory is off by default for that reason.
- The phone remote is built and tested with Chrome on Android. Other mobile browsers may work but are untested.
- It is not a full low-vision suite. If you depend on a screen reader or need the whole range of ZoomText / Fusion, use those; SlyPilot's Magnifier is a free addition, not a replacement.
- Pen, touch and second monitors were tried on one Surface and with automatic tests. A projector or a second monitor with a very different scaling may need a look the first time.
- It is not presentation software. It helps you show and mark a screen; it does not make slides, share a whiteboard with others or record a webinar by itself (screen recording is SlyPilot Pro).
- A big model is still better at big jobs. The small built-in language model is meant for fixing and cleaning text, not for long rewrites.
🏁 The Verdict
If you spend your day moving between desktops, windows, a headset, a pen and a phone, SlyPilot puts those in one private, focus-safe cockpit instead of a drawer of separate tools.
